The Columbia Guide to Standard American English
elope (v.), elopement (n.) The verb means "to run away or to
abscond, particularly in order to get
married" or, occasionally,"in
lieu of getting married." Obviously context must make clear which is meant;
some readers will understand that marriage is intended unless it is specifically excluded. The noun offers similar possibility for ambiguity.
