The Columbia Guide to Standard American English

drivel (n., v.)

The literal sense predominates in the verb, meaning“to drool,”as in The baby driveled on my necktie

but the figurative sense predominates in the noun,“nonsensical talk,”as in I've never heard such drivel.

Americans normally don't double the l in driveled and driveling; the English normally do. See CONSONANTS (2)
