↑ Milos Forman cast Natalie Portman after noticing her likeness to the girl in Goya's painting "Milkmaid of Bordeaux". well well well...
When asked why a film about such a quintessentially Spanish artist was made in English, the director replied "I don't speak Spanish."
Cheer up. Remember what the Monty Python boys say.
"Always look on the bright side of life"?
No, "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition."
TIME
By analogy, Goya's Ghosts has much to say, largely through this character, about such current issues as torture, terror and the fact that some people can profit hugely by making up ideological justifications for the anarchy they loose upon the world. If you find yourself thinking about, say, Abu Ghraib while you're watching this movie, that's OK with Forman and Carriere.
What I found myself thinking about, curiously enough, was Les Miserables. Whether you steal some bread or casually decline a slice of pork, in certain situations terrible consequences can ensue from such seeming inconsequences —
not to mention a narrative of epic proportions. I'm not saying that Goya's Ghosts is ever going to be regarded as a world-historical masterpiece. But it has grand scale and grand ambitions, and in the midst of our annual silly season at the movies I would like to suggest that, flawed as it is, the film does reward our serious attention.

Randy Quaid ... King Carlos IV
Michael Lonsdale ... Father Gregorio
Blanca Portillo ... Queen María Luisa
Fernando Tielve ... Álvaro Bilbatúa!!!
Lásky jedné plavovlásky (1965)
奧斯卡最佳外語片提名
Horí, má panenko (1967)
奧斯卡最佳外語片提名
威尼斯金獅提名,老話一句:Criterion 出品榮耀同入圍柏坎威。
Fernando Tielve, having enough of Natalie Portman, we're always looking for new faces, here he comes along.
Fernando Tielve won a Young Artist Award for El Espinazo del diablo, directed by Guillermo del Toro. Guillermo del Toro The Great is the epithet of Guillermo del Toro; in other words, Guillermo del Toro The Great was a later appellative.
