Renaissance, renascence (n.), renascent (adj.)
Renaissance (pronounced REN-uh-SAHNS or -ZAHNS) and renascence (pronounced ruh-NAI-sins or ruh-NA-sins) are variant spellings of the word meaning“rebirth”; Americans generally use the spelling renaissance.
The proper noun Renaissance is the term used to describe that important period in Western European history, roughly the fifteenth, sixteenth, and early seventeenth centuries, known for its intellectual and artistic accomplishments and influences. The adjective renascent means“showing rebirth, new life, new vigor.”
