n. (名詞 noun)

          1.    【律】重罪

The Columbia Guide to Standard American English

felony, misdemeanor, violation (nn.)

In statutory schemes, each of these terms has its definition peculiar to the jurisdiction in which it exists.

In general, a violation is the breaking of any law, and statutes then may class such violations as either misdemeanors or felonies

A felony is a major crime, for which the punishment is more severe (usually ranging from imprisonment to death) than for misdemeanors, which are minor crimes.

Misdemeanor [mis-di-mee-ner] can also be a generic term for any sort of misdeed. In its specialized senses, often as specified in law, violation may refer to rape, sexual assault, or desecration (褻瀆神聖) of sacred or other protected places.
