The Columbia Guide to Standard American English

gauge, gage, gouge (nn., vv.), gouging (n.)

These words are never confused in speech, but gouge is sometimes misspelled gauge, and gauge is often misspelled guage

The noun [gauge] (pronounced GAIJ) is a measure or an instrument for measuring, and there are many specialized meanings, such as the gauge of metal or other fabrics, and the like.

The verb gauge (pronounced GAIJ) means to take measurements, to estimate, and it too has some specialized meanings.

[Gage] is a variant of gauge, but apparently in dwindling use.

The other gage is a glove or some other item offered as a pledge, as in giving a challenge to a [duel].

The noun [gouge] means "a tool" and "the mark such a tool or another instrument makes in wood or another material," and the verb means "to use such a tool or to make such a mark."

Figuratively, the verb gouge means "to cheat" or "to overcharge," in uses that are limited to Conversational or Informal contexts. Pronounce both noun and verb GOUJ

The figurative use of the gerund, goug[ing], is common; it means "cheating or extorting," especially "overcharging for goods or services."
