Still, it could have been better. While the main body of the film offers constant riveting action, it is regrettably framed by a pair of unfortunate camp bits involving frequent Bond nemesis Ernst Blofeld and a Margaret Thatcher lookalike.
Indeed, Pham Thi Mai Hoa makes a stronger impression than Do Thi Hai Yen in a smaller role as Phuong's sister. Nonetheless, the sumptuous cinematography and Caine's impressive performance are riveting enough to carry the film through its occasional rough spots.
Though Serkis makes only a couple brief appearances in the movie, it's his playing and his character -- a sa-tanic mix of lunacy and lucidity --
that [sparks] the moral and ethical [dilemmas] of
the title character. The devil really does get the best lines here, and Serkis' scary, hair-trigger perf is riveting.
