The Columbia Guide to Standard American English

anecdote, antidote (nn.)

The initial and final syllables are identical, but only the inexperienced would be likely to confuse these words.

An anecdote (AN-ek-dot) is“a short narrative,”and

an antidote (AN-ti-dot) is“a remedy that counteracts a poison or anything else injurious.”

Antidote combines with to, against, and for: Music can be an antidote to [for, against] gloom
